As we make amends we continually confront the issue of forgiveness—of others and ourselves. 

As we work the steps of our recovery, the topic of forgiveness will inevitably come up. Newcomers usually think first and foremost of forgiving others who have harmed them, but therapists and sponsors typically urge them to also spend time making amends to and forgiving themselves. Forgiveness always involves a shift in perception. In the phrase often heard in 12-step groups, you must “give up all hope of a better past” so you can move forward with a better future.
