In Maryland, 27-year-old Meagan C. Simonaire, a conservative Republican and the youngest member of the Maryland General Assembly, spoke out about her own bisexuality, her parents’ attempt to force “gay conversion therapy” on her, and how traumatic that was for her as she argued for passage of a bill banning the use of gay conversion therapy on minors. (The American Psychiatric Association, the American Psychological Association, the American Medical Association, and most other medical and psychological professional organizations have issued strongly worded statements against this type of often harmful therapy.) The bill passed by a 3 to 1 margin in both chambers, and Maryland Governor Larry Hogan, another Republican, intends to sign it, making Maryland the 11th state to ban gay conversion therapy on minors.
