When I discover who I am, I’ll be free.

Personal transformation, such as we see with addiction recovery, begins with self-awareness. This does not, however, mean paralysis through analysis, where we spend so much time looking inward that we get stuck there and never make any changes. Instead, it means, when we are feeling down, asking ourselves: “What are my feelings right now? What are my thoughts right now? Why am I having these feelings and thoughts? What am I doing with the feelings and thoughts?” When we can pause in our difficult moments and assess what’s going on, we become self-aware, we start to see patterns in our thinking, and we recognize how those patterns lead to the actions that make us unhappy (like our addiction).

Just for Today
I will pause and examine my feelings and thoughts, and I will consider how they affect my behavior.
