When I discover who I am, I’ll be free.

Personal transformation, such as we see with addiction recovery, begins with self-awareness. This does not, however, mean paralysis through analysis, where you spend so much time looking inward that you get stuck there and never make any changes. Instead, it means, when you are feeling down, asking yourself: “What are my feelings right now? What are my thoughts right now? Why am I having these feelings and thoughts? What am I doing with the feelings and thoughts?” When you can pause in your difficult moments and assess what’s going on, you become self-aware, you start to see patterns in your thinking, and you recognize how those thinking patterns lead to the actions that make you unhappy (like your addiction).

Just for Today
I will pause and examine my feelings and thoughts, and I will consider how they affect my behavior.
