The most necessary element of change is awareness of the need for change.
Step seven reads: “Humbly asked God to remove our shortcomings.” Usually, this is done as part of a prayer—either the seventh step prayer or a more general prayer. However, the “religious” feel of this can be a sticking point for many of us. One useful suggestion if we run into this roadblock is that instead of praying, we can simply state aloud—as a mantra—our desire to have our character defects removed. Usually, the mere realization that our character defects exist, coupled with the contrary action of saying aloud that we would like to be rid of them, results in significant progress.
Just for Today
Try working step seven as a mantra, rather than a prayer.
