The Need to Work Step One

Active sex addicts typically struggle to see the insanity of their behavior.

Step One reads: We admitted we were powerless over sex – that our lives had become unmanageable. In 12-step meetings we often hear addicts discussing their “bottom,” the incident that resulted in a moment of clarity in which they suddenly understood they had a major problem and needed to make significant changes. Unfortunately, these moments of clarity are often fleeting. When the crisis passes, so does our desire to live differently. This is where Step One comes in. We work Step One by unearthing our complete sexual history and the problems our sexual behaviors have created, and we see, often for the first time, the totality of our addiction and its consequences. in this way, Step One reinforces our moment of clarity, cementing our desire for recovery and healing.
