Mastering Effective Group Therapy for Addiction: A Key to Lasting Recovery
Addiction-focused group therapy is a vital component of addiction treatment, distinct from traditional psychodynamic approaches. It provides a platform for clients to seek peer support, connection, and accountability. These groups create an optimal environment for meaningful social interactions, peer insights, and feedback related to disclosure and related tasks. This presentation will include case examples and provide attendees with foundational materials for use in group settings.
Objectives
- Use evidence-based techniques – Participants will observe the use of two therapeutic approaches, such as CBT and motivational interviewing, in group therapy.
- Manage group dynamics – Participants will be able to identify concrete examples of setting group norms and addressing challenges like relapse or splitting.
- Confront distortions – Participants will be able to identify three examples of client distortions and apply effective interventions for each circumstance.

Behavioral Problems Require Behavioral Therapy: How Traditional Therapy Fails to Promote Addiction Recovery
Traditional psychodynamic, non-directive therapies emphasize minimal therapist intervention, encouraging clinicians to ‘follow the client.’ However successful addiction treatment necessitates a shift towards structured, accountability-driven, action-oriented approaches like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). This presentation highlights the essential adjustments psychodynamic therapists must make to integrate CBT successfully into addiction treatment, thereby enhancing outcomes and fostering long-term behavioral change.
Objectives
- Distinguish essential differences between psychodynamic therapy and CBT.
- Compare and contrast three key situations that favor CBT over self-reflective psychotherapy
in addiction treatment. - Identify and provide two examples of successful CBT interventions.
