Thoroughly working Step Two – coming to believe that a power greater than ourselves will restore us to sanity – is vital to our recovery, because it prepares us for the longer-term solution to come. It introduces us to the idea that we must accept outside assistance and guidance if we want to establish and maintain sobriety. We’ve tried it on our own and we couldn’t stay sober, so now we’re going to have to rely on something greater than ourselves. If we envision a traditional version of God or religion as this “power greater than ourselves,” that’s perfectly OK. If not, we can think about 12-step groups and others who support our recovery as that power.
